Necklace Length
Necklace length is really one question: where do you want the piece to fall? Here's what each standard length does. The same length can be worn by anyone; it's about the look you're after, not who's wearing it.
| Length | Where it falls |
|---|---|
| 14 in | A choker, close around the neck |
| 16 in | At the base of the neck, like a collar |
| 18 in | At the collarbone — the most common length, and ideal for pendants |
| 20 in | A few inches below the collarbone; sits well over higher necklines |
| 22 in | Mid-chest; easy over most shirts and sweaters |
| 24 in | Below most necklines |
| 30 in | Below the bust; layers well with shorter pieces |
| 35 in | Long — wear as one strand or doubled |
Finding your length
The easiest way is to measure a necklace you already own and like. Or hold a string around your neck, let it drop to where you want the piece to sit, and measure that length against a ruler.
These are guides. Exactly where a length falls depends on your height and build, so give yourself an inch either way. For a pendant, an 18-inch chain is the safe starting point.
